Leave No Trace: the seven principles

Leave the spot the way you would have liked to find it.

A backpack, a sleeping mat and a bag of collected rubbish at a clean spot by a lake.

The most beautiful spot is the one you leave as you found it. The Leave No Trace initiative has boiled it down to seven principles.

  1. Plan well. Know the local rules, check the weather, pack bin bags.
  2. Stay on durable ground. Park and pitch on tracks, pitches, gravel or rock, not on flower meadows or right at the water's edge.
  3. Take your rubbish with you. Everything you bring, you take back, including food scraps and tissues.
  4. Leave things where they are. Don't dig up, break off or pocket anything as a souvenir.
  5. Keep fires small. Where allowed, only in existing fire pits. The stove is often the better choice.
  6. Leave animals alone. Keep your distance, don't feed them, store food well.
  7. Be considerate. Keep quiet, leave space, respect quiet hours. Your neighbours want to arrive too.

Sounds obvious. Still worth reading through once before every season.
